GCSE Maths

GCSE Maths is becoming harder. The increase in content volume and complexity in the new syllabus, together with a greater emphasis on problem-solving and mathematical reasoning means that students need to study harder and smarter if their choice of subject and university requires high grades. Take for example algebra. This is a section of the GCSE maths syllabus that many students find challenging, especially when faced with questions that place an emphasis on transfering basic algebraic manipulation skills to tackling problems in unfamiliar contexts. Developing such skills requires adaptible tuition that is sensitive to the strengths and weaknesses of the individual student. This is the hallmark of good tutoring, and something that we aim to provide. Tutoring needs to cover not only subject knowledge but also exam technique, such as not getting bogged down on a particular question, but going on to another question, and also being disciplined in the time allocated per question. A good tutor may also provide new perspectives and approaches to tackling certain problems and an ability to spot "the underlying structure" of a question requiring applying mathematical techniques to new or unfamiliar contexts. More applied psychology and less "rote learning".
